Objectives of the Research
This study is practice-oriented research, where the objective was to understand and reveal the barriers and challenges of integrated design and delivery processes. What are the reasons for the slow adoption of BIM and what are the problems to solve so as to help the change of the construction processes and transformation of the industry towards integrated design and delivery solutions (IDDS)?
The aim of the research was two-fold: to identify the process points that need development or changing, so that the implementation of BIM would be possible in the best and most productive way; and to point out shortcomings in the software tools so that the tools could be developed to be more usable and to better suit the working processes of designers, consultants and other actors (Figure 1). The research was multidisciplinary and the research team consisted of researchers from both building ICT and from the business process development domain. Research was conducted in close interaction with the industry practitioners. The research scope was broad: the whole construction process and processes and points of view of all its stakeholders.
FIGURE 1 Describing the starting points, methods and targets of the research Source: Hirvensalo et al. (2009) In this article, issues of process development and technology implementation in networked construction businesses are discussed. Challenges that were confronted in an example case project are listed and examples of the reasons behind them are described. The challenges are classified into categories. Detailed solutions to the problems are a matter of further research and development, but the results act as a foundation for the following work. The main focus of the research was to create and share knowledge and understanding between the industry and academia and between the industry members of different domains.
